The waiting game

I had a job interview yesterday with a rather prestigious law firm. The firm has been nominated for the past 3 years as one of Fortune Magazine's best 100 companies to work for. Mind you, only 5 law firms TOTAL made the list. Needless to say, it would be a great place to work. Now, I have to play the waiting game because it's "don't call us, we'll call you." I'd rather know right now so I can stop worrying about what I'm going to wear on the second interview since I only have one interview suit! Plus, I need a full time job! And, as an added bonus, this law firm is right across the street from Powell's! I anxiously await their phone call.

Airline ticket buying

I wish I knew the secret to buying cheap flights on the internet. It seems that every time I need to fly somewhere, the tickets are always really expensive. But when Kevin looks for flights, he always gets these great deals. So what gives? I try and ask him for help and for secret knowledge but I still can find a flight from PDX to CHI for less than $300 in July. Kevin found our flight to Chicago in May for $178. So unfair! One minute the flight is cheap, you click to buy and the flight is no longer available or hundreds of dollars more expensive. It's so frustrating! I would appreciate any tips out there for finding cheap flights. I need to get to Chicago in July for a week. Right now the flights are $300 and counting...

Yummy sushi is no substitute for cheese fries

Tonight for dinner I'm meeting some friends for happy hour at Dragonfish for sushi! I love sushi! Portland has a lot of sushi places, more than bar-b-que or burger joints. Sushi is great, but it's no substitute for a gyros or cheese fries. That is what I gave up when moving to Portland, and I miss them terribly! Next time i'm back in Chicago i'm getting a gyros and cheese fries and a large coke "for the go."* Ok, it's not just cheese fries and gyros that I miss, it's the little shops on the corner that make those kinds of foods, sub sandwiches included. Portland doesn't really have those kinds of places, and the few that are around aren't very good. My neighborhood is just fast food chains and megastores. Wal-mart is even looking at the vacant property approximately 500 ft from my building. Does that make me happy? Not at all...even though I secrectly like shopping at Wal-mart...but that's for another day.

*If anyone gets this reference, I'll buy you some cheese fries!

The life of a temp

I was thinking I should change the title of this blog to "Life as a temp" but that would just be boring. So, I got called this morning to come in and temp at the same place I temped before for the rest of the week. Good news to me, bad news for the lady I'm filling in for. I don't like it that I'm benefiting and profiting from this lady's tragedy (house fire/dead show dog). Kinda weird if you ask me. But, since I haven't worked in over 7 business days, it was time to make some more cash because the rent is due. Do I like temping? Not particularly but it's better than being at home. At least I'm gaining more experience and that's what counts.

"Middlesex"

Middlesex I just finished reading "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides. A very interesting book. I really enjoyed how the author traced back the family history to Turkey and how they came to settle in Detroit. I enjoyed reading this. On to the next book, which is "Guns, Germs and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies" by Jared Diamond.

Millikin News

I just got the monthly "Out of the Blue" email today. At the bottom of the newsletter there was a link to the Millikin Weddingdex, basically a place to post your wedding pictures with various MU alumni in them. I found this most amusing!

Why you ask? First off, I recognized a lot of the people in those pictures. Namely the Keith Creighton and Beth Mason wedding. I knew just about everybody in that one thanks to cousin Jason, fellow MU alumni, who is also in that picture. I was thoroghly amused to see the Becky Rash and Derrick Holt wedding photo. God I hated all those people. I wonder if Cara knows about that...she totally lusted after no fewer than 3 guys in that picture. Makes me chuckle...he he!

Unemployment is boring!

I am officially sick of being unemployed. I don't know how to fill my days. I would sleep all day but then I'd feel guilty about not working on finding a job. And when I am working on finding a job, I feel like I'm not doing enough, or doing it right for that matter. Why is this taking so long? I want benefits again! Paid time off, health insurance, dental insurance, damn it, I want a 401k! I want to go to work everyday and be happy about it. No more feeling useless and expendable. I need permanence! Can you sense my frustration?

Still jobless...

Today is my last day at Hoffman, Hart & Wagner. I'm still on the look out for a better full time job.

On a lighter note, an article in The Oregonian yesterday proclaimed "Survey finds Californians are indeed tree huggers." Now that's great news!

Trying something new

This is an attempt to become more computer saavy while also documenting some things I'd like to remember in the future.
