Yesterday marked the beginning of this year's CSA share! We're excited to get fresh veggies every week again. This year we got a similar mix to what we got last year, but with a few extra, non leafy green items.
1 red leaf lettuce
1 green leaf lettuce
1 bunch spinach
1 bunch arugula

3 pints of strawberries?! Oh nice.
We just harvested our first chard...never had it before. How do you prepare it?
Cut out the stems (they're stringy) and cook it like you would spinach. We like to add chard to pasta dishes or cook it in a pan with bacon grease (yes we have a jar of special bacon grease for cooking) and other spices. it's good with a little red pepper flakes.
Used the chard in a chicken soup on Wednesday, to help us feel better in the middle of this nasty cold/flu thing. It was great. Kind of...minerally-tasting. I cut out the stalks, and then cut them in to 1" pieces and sauteed them with the (garden fresh) onion and carrots until they were soft. Added the chard leaves and gave them a brief saute before adding the chicken stock. Made for a very colorful and tasty soup.
Will try sauteeing in bacon grease, next. We also have a little jar of bacon grease in the fridge...no point in throwing out all that flavor.
Haven't tried it in soup yet, but we should! And yes, bacon grease is the way to go if you're just eating it as a side dish. The chard does need some extra flavor.
